On being Norwegian

Yesterday was Syttende Mai (Norwegian Constitution Day), and the Paulson clan gathered in Hugo to celebrate with a feast of Norsk cuisine. Lefse, meatballs, herring, gjetost - the works. As an added bonus, it was a beautiful spring day.

I rushed home from church to make my contribution, fløtegrøt. If you're not familiar, close your eyes and envision a) white; b) bland; and c) crazily dairy-fat based. That about covers it. The recipe called for heavy cream, whole milk, and flour; from this over a cup of clarified butter lets from the custardy goo. "Seasoning" consists of said butter, sugar and (uff da!) cinnamon.

My moment of koldtbord bravery? Two words - head cheese.
Two more words - never again.

DIY cosmetology

Well, it had to happen sooner or later.

Kidlet + scissors + a moment alone = self-styled hairdo

Considering a 4-year-old was wielding the shears, it couldn't have been tamer. She basically extended her bangs by a lock of hair on one side. A trip to Kids' Hair (god love 'em) to balance the look, and you really can't tell anything transpired.

I don't recall cutting my own hair as a child, but I do remember giving my sister a trim. I was about 5 or 6 (which means Ness was 3 or 4). We were supposed to be napping together on the big bed; instead of sleeping I cut her hair and, being the clever older sister, dropped the evidence behind the headboard. Yeah. No one will ever find it there, I thought. Not Mom, who cleaned the floors religiously because we had a Dalmatian who shed every time she breathed and it was the 1970s and we had a black Naugahyde couch and red shag carpet in the living room that showed every short white hair. Nope.

You may ask, "Did you ever do it again?" Hell no. Especially when Mom said if I did, she was giving Ness the scissors with permission to cut my hair.

Smart mom.

The bonds of love

Again, the Squab has her finger on the pulse of the blogosphere. She posted this video tonight, and it bears repeating. LOUD repeating, all over this nation and world.

Please share this video with everyone. And thanks, Elise.

The Great Schlep

I know, I know - you're saying, "What's up with this, Meema? Another YouTube video? Come on, write something prosaic, or at least put up some knitting already!"

Believe me, if I had knitting to show, I would. I have been quite derelict in this regard, and to my knitting readers, I apologize. And as far as prose is concerned? Well, let's just say my personal muse must be on an extended tropical hiatus with my knitting mojo. Scandalous fling they're having...

Anyway, I loves me my Sarah Silverman, and she's made a very funny video promoting The Great Schlep. Do partake, support, and/or consider a conversation with familial elders.

An auntie's day

Happy birthday wishes to my little sister (who is also an AWESOME aunt - just check the sticker from Kidlet's card if you need proof).

I love ya, Ness!

92 and ready for more

My paternal grandmother's birthday falls at the end of July, and the Norwegian clan gathers each summer at my aunt's home on Forest Lake to celebrate it - and summery goodness. We couldn't have requested a more perfect day for her 92nd birthday party today.

The six eldest great-grandkids were there (my AZ cousin just had her first son two weeks ago), and it was interesting to see how some things never change. My cousins, sister and I frequently ran up and down those spiral stairs as kids ourselves; we have many a photo of our plaid pants and Holly Hobbie sweatshirts posed just like our girls today. Those were the days...

Happy birthday, Grandma!

So tired

Aren't vacations supposed to be restful?

We're on our way home, one person lighter (no pat-, mat-, or soro- types of events; sister just had to fly home early), and hanging our hats in lovely (? it's dark) Toledo, Ohio for the night. I wanted to scratch a few words to say
I MISS MY PEEPS.

Oh, yeah, and I love New York. One could even say that I [heart] it.

22 July 2008

O Canada, and then some

Pictures later. Just use your imagination for now.

Second day of the trip is behind us. We criss-crossed Michigan, entered into Canada without so much of a cursory glance at a driver's license, and made it to our first tourist destination: Toronto, specifically Lettuce Knit. If you don't read Stephanie Pearl-McPhee's blog regularly, do. It's so worth it to read this one all. the. way. back - she's that funny. Anyway, this is her LYS of choice, and I can see why. After visiting the neighborhood and shop (and purchasing several skeins - souvenir yarn doesn't count as stash, right?), I am completely chartreuse with envy. I came away loving Toronto as a whole and that 'hood in particular.

Second tourist destination: Niagara Falls, the Canadian side. Didn't intend to make it a nightfall trip, but it was quite lovely. And damp. Screw the hair, eh? The only complaint I and the rest of my crew have is that Canadians need BIGGER SIGNAGE in heavily touristed areas. It took us almost a friggin' hour to find the durn bridge to get across whatever water that was to the New York side. BTW, apparently the US Border patrol is trying to thin the herd. Just let us in, already...

Heading to New York today for the Big Game. Pray for us.

On the road

A brief note of howdy from the open trail. We travelled about 750 miles yesterday, stopping for the night in Lansing, MI. We have neither killed nor abandoned any member of our party as of this posting. More photos to come.
(DISCLAIMER: Readers from the great state of Indiana, please do not take this personally; you've overcome great hardship in your lives, and we are all proud of you.) Gary, Indiana is a most unfortunate selling point for the state of Indiana. Definitely looking for another route home...

Happy campers

I'm back in town (for a few days, at least!).

This weekend J, Kidlet and I attended Rainbow Families' Family Camp, complete with s'mores, crafts, and swimming.

No boating to be had, as there were wicked whitecaps on the lake the entire time. All in all, a great first camping experience for Kidlet. What a trooper!

29 May 2008

Huh? What?

Um, yeah, it's the end of May.

Holy crap, where did the spring go?

Spent a good bit of the holiday weekend with J's family; her brother and sister-almost-in-law were visiting from Chicago. We were even able to squeeze in a birthday party for Uncle Weswey (a week early, but hey, he was here).

As for me, I'm feeling a bit like my knitting bag - chaotic. It went to school with me today with four projects inside. (Granted, one was only a test swatch for a colorwork sweater, but four chunks of fiber nonetheless.) I did work on each of them, if only to justify their travels. Aside from completing the swatch, it was mostly flitting.

If anyone has a cure for this, let me know. Soon.

RooneyToons

It's a sad day for our family. Grammy's dog, Rooney, passed away last night. He was 15. Grammy had adopted Rooney and his littermate, Beau, when they were brand new puppies out in Massachusetts; soon after they moved to the Twin Cities. Kidlet has always had great affection for animals, and I'm sure a large part of that is due to her love of Grammy's doggies. We will miss Rooney, but are glad he is once again healthy, happy, and playing with his brother.
Be thankful for little things today.

Love makes the world CA go 'round

Ellen DeGeneres announced her engagement to girlfriend Portia de Rossi during the taping of her talk show today. Their über-public announcement follows directly on the heels of the California Supreme Court ruling which strikes down state laws banning gay marriage as unconstitutional.

Woo-hoo!!

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes

Where did my baby go, and who is this big girl calling me Meema?

21 February 2008

The power of one

Tonight two Blogger families (the Meemas and the Cates) joined forces for a glamorous night of haute cuisine et couture (translation: dinner at DQ Grill & Chill and shopping at the nearby Once Upon a Child). Woo-hoo! Baby D turned seven weeks old as we waited for our food, and the girls revelled in each other’s company – conversing, sharing, and playing like actual little people. Whodathunkit?

While we were at OUAC, one of the songs playing over the store’s loudspeakers was KT Tunstall’s “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree.” This Scottish songstress has an intriguing voice, and Cate and I both love the song (B actually knows it, too). If you have never seen her on stage, check out this video. She performs this song completely alone; every track of the song is sampled with a loop pedal. I stand in awe.
